I plan to look at a Massey Ferguson model 10 square hay baler this weekend. The owner says, it worked fine the last time it was used. When was the model 10 manufactured, are parts available and how reliable? Also, what are some of the problems with the model 10 and what should I look for. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I have a M-F 10 baler and can pass on a few things I had trouble with on mine. The plunger runs back and forth on rails. These rails seem to get rust underneath them which then forces them to bow up between the bolts that hold them down. Result is that the plunger is very difficult to move. If you do run it, they will heat up and start smoking. I know- mine did. I just thought they were stiff and would free up. Anyway, I had to pull the rails out of mine and made new ones out of angle iron. They worked OK this summer. New ones cost several hundred dollars- more than the baler is worth. Also had trouble with the pickup reel. The bars that hold the spring fingers would not flip up when they came around. Turned out there is a plate at the far end which causes these bars to flip out. Mine had worn right through. I had to put little pieces of steel in where they had worn out. That also worked fine for the summer. I think you can keep one of theser things running for quite a while if you are ingenious but sometimes, when a field of hay is ready to bale, ingenuity does not come gfast enough. Also, before you run it, check the brake that stops the plunger if the needles are out of time. Make sure that brake works. If you cut the needles off, you are into a big expense to buy new ones, there are very few used ones left and welded or brazed ones work sometimes but not others.

Thanks for the information P-B. You couldn't have given a better description of the problems associated with the model 10. I haven't had time to look it over as yet. I was told it has been sitting outside for two years and is covered with rust. The owner is asking $450US. Is that too much? All comments encouraged.

I have a model 12 Massey. This baler is at least 30 years old but it works fine. I would guess the model 10 is a little older and maybe smaller. Parts are available if you want to pay the price.

I want to find information about a part from a hay baler/square from 124 model massy ferguson. The part that cuts the wire or string that ties the hay. I need this infomation as soon as possible.

Thankyou Ben

There are lots of posts on balers. I like my #10. I've posted thoughts about it on the Massey forum as well. Paid pretty good money but have had no problems. I was able to get a new manual at the local dealer. Jim.

Thanks for the information Jim. I will take your information in consideration when I go look at the MF model 10 this weekend.
