I'm looking to buy a square bailer, but don't know much about them. What brand/model is the most reliable and easiest to get parts for? Any opinions welcome.

Follow Toms advice and read the manual. I bought my first baler last fall. Heres what I found out: Green paint costs more than red. Find a baler that has been kept in the shed. Pay a little more for your baler, you probably will get what you pay for. I bought a New Holland Hayliner 68 in real good shape and paid $1500.00. (Fair price in E.Tenn.). I have no regrets. Hooked it up and baled 650 bales only missed 2-3. Good Luck.

new hollands are good and so are jd's but who can afford them? I bought a massey bailer that did not work and fixed it up completely(new plunger rails, new bearings. ext.) and still come out cheaper than a jd $700 cheaper as a matter of fact. I would go with a new holland or a massey

As everyone else said, stick with NH or JD. I was in your shoes early last spring. Wound up buying a Massey Ferguson; I think it's a good baler, but new parts are expensive and old ones hard to come by where I live.

One final bit of advice: DO NOT try to run the thing until you have gotten and thoroughly read the owners manual! I learned this the hard and expensive way: the obvious points were ok so I just ran it a few minutes just to 'try it out.' There was an adjustment problem that caused mine to 'jump time' and it is still costing me time and money (welded needles, $100; new needles $135; new bill hook, $80)...once the owner's manual came in two weeks later ($7), it was something I would have caught if I had gone through the check out procedures, and not broken anything at all.

good luck,
Tom

I'd stick with New Holland or John Deere. When we baled square bales we had a New Holland 273. It was a very good reliable baler. Sold it to a friend who still uses it each year.

JD 336. When we sold them we never heard about them until it was traded in again. Find one in good shape, look closly at the tucker fingers they like to rust out in that area. Check over the usual areas too. Pick up,plunger drive, plunger head, knives etc.

On small balers stay with JD or New Holland. You will be money and time ahead.
