Just had a fence row bulldozed in preparation for a new fence. I had four post holes to dig so I could set the corner posts. We live in SW MO, and it's VERY dry here. No rain in August, and so far only 1.3" in September. I just purchased a new Bush Hog model 2102 post hole digger with the bear claw cutting edges. Everyone (including the dealer) told me I couldn't get the holes dug as it was too dry. Gave it a try and got them all dug. Got the auger down all the way to the gear box housing. I was really impressed with the new digger. Don't think my old Ford digger would have done it. The Bush Hog seems to be a great machine.

I needed to dig some post holes inside my barn, which has hard packed dirt and really dry. I poked a small hole in the bottom of a large plastic jug and filled it with water. I set the jug where I wanted to dig a hole, and the next morning the leaking water had softened the dirt down about two feet. Much easier to dig.

Kind of a similar to this thought was an instance when I needed to drive a copper rod into the ground to use with an electric fencer. To be able to drive in into the ground and get it to actually make a ground due to the dry conditions I soaked the ground with water. It worked very well and I got the fencer operating properly.

Kermit, you must live down by Branson/Springfield so it's got to be fairly hilly and rocky too. Did you have any problems with rocks?

We live southwest of Springfield. Only had trouble with rocks in one hole. Churned out a few good size ones. I was really impressed with how easy the auger dug the holes. The auger steadily worked it's way down, and I got all the holes clear to the gear box housing. I also like the way the Bush Hog mounts better than I did my old Ford.
