Just bought a post hole digger. Didn't get the downpressure device. Pretty much just sits there and spins. Tried four holes. Got one about a foot deep and the others about 2 inches. I'm using a Ford 3000. Any ideas without buying the downpressure device? Thanks for any help. Festus

You can borrow mine, put a seat on top and give her a fist full of crossword puzzles and call her down at supper time.

you can buy my IHC Super C it has down pressure.

Hell on post holes in hard ground. Have to watch it close in wet ground or it will just dig itself in and you will have a devil of a time pulling it out...

I too have to dig some holes, and here in SW MO it is VERY dry. Don't know if I'll get the job done or not. I just purchased a new Bush Hog post hole digger with 12" auger. Hopefully it will do the job. I formally owned a Ford post hole digger. Once when I tried to dig with it I didn't have much luck. I replaced the cutting edges and the fish tail point on the very bottom of the auger. I was then able to get the hole dug. Are the cutting edges and fish tail point in good shape on your unit? You may need to consider replaceing these. Good luck.

I don't have the fish-tail point on mine, but I'll tell you what I did. I could only get a couple of inches deep, but then I'd pump a couple of gallons of water in the hole and let it set. (Overnight worked the best.) Then it would go 2-3 feet really easy. Sometimes I'd just wait an hour or so and it would drill good. Kinda depends on how good the soil drains. Lotsa clay here. Jefferson City, MO. Thanks for the info, Festus

If you have to dig a lot of holes, consider a different tractor, one with double acting lift. I use an IH 340 Utility with the outboard double acting lift cylinder. My only problem is stopping at the depth I want.

The cheater bar is the easiest to do.
It has more leverage than sitting on top.
(I have done both)
The most effective was using the front end
loader of a second tractor to push down.
I would not do this on some of the lighter
construction diggers, but it worked well on
the heavy duty Danuser we use with 18" and 24"
bits.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll give it another try. It's been so dry here, (MO), the ground is hard as a rock. I'll try putting some water on it and see what happens. Festus

I use a 12" auger on my 2N....basically it's a two man job. Pu the one most familiar with the tractor on the tractor, have helper push down, I use a bar for leverage. I also find idling the tractor is best. That way if you hit rocks, the tracot will stall. Easier to restart than replace the shear bolt!

Take Care
Steve

Festus:

Clear the sod. It tends to get bunched-up on the cutter and slow progress. There are different tips available which may give a better "bite". That auger should pull itself into the soil, assuming you're not digging into rock or hardpan.

I jammed a 5' wrecking bar between the gearbox and the frame and had my dad (280#) "lean" on it. The other trick we learned was to clear the sod away with a set of clamshell diggers and then pour a bucket of water in the hole. We dug about 60 holes that way.

Don't recommend it for obvious safety reasons....but several years ago I saw three guys drilling post holes not far from Green River WY, who had the following system: One of them operated the tractor, one watched, and the third SAT on TOP of the digger!!!
