A local dealer has one on the lot. He's asking $1895, I've not seen it but he says it's in excellent shape, and that it was traded in on a disc mower. Does anybody know what years these were made and if they were decent machines? Any particular thing prone to wear out? I'm going to look at it next weekend and see for myself what kinda shape it's in. Thanks. Casey

Our 469 was a great mower. Can't even guess how many acres of hay it cut. Wobble box always seemed to be a problem. Would also shear a pin on pto shaft if raised to high while spinning. Parked it a couple of years ago because it was worn out and old. Got a 489, decent mower, but seems to plug more in heavy downed hay, go figure.

I found a 489 earlier this year that needed minor repair. It was $750 at a local dealer. The parts would have added about $250 to the cost. I would have put them in myself.

Bottom line that sounds a little high for the Tulsa, Ok area.

$1500 sounds better, depending on overall condition. I used my dad's 1969 469 for several seasons until it was sold recently at auction. Inspect the driveline shaft, gears, and spline, etc, under the cover on the left side. We had these rebuilt at a dealer in 1996 for $1000.

It's old, around 1970. Rollers should be looked at for cracking, dry rot, and general wear. Bottom roll always seems to go first. Look at slope sheet between the cutterbar and rollers for rust, holes, cracks, etc. Make sure the cutterbar isn't bent. Look underneath, check wear on the shoes. Check the drive (wobblebox) for any play. Lots of haybines being traded for disk machines around here. I've recently seen some decent NH 489s listed below $3000.

Make sure the roller tension system works! There's a bellcrank fitting on both sides in the tension crank system; they get broken and then there is no tension for the squeeze action other than the top roller weight! The bellcranks are about $20 each but are a job to replace! My 469 works okay; just finished second cutting with it!

My opinion. It is a good old machine. I agree with the above on what to check. The price seems very high and finally I heard the rumor that NH was no longer going to support parts for that model. I part out my 469 last year and went to a 488. The 488, 489 are easier to run and significally newer.
