Sharpening baler knives

I'm looking for some advise on sharpening the knives on a Hayliner 271 I purchased last summer. Is it possible to sharpen them while still on the baler or must they be removed? If the do need to be removed, what's the best way to remove them? Will I be crawling into the chute to do this or what. As far as the sharpening, what's the best way to do it....a grinding wheel? Any advise is appreciated

The answer can vary. Of course you can try to sharpen them in the machine but to do a good job you must remove them. Here are some points to remember. The rear knife you can remove easily because the bolts are on the outside of the bale case. To help though, you may want to remove the press(squeeze) channel so you can reach down and hold the knife while loostening the bolts. Very IMPORTANT, do not mess up the shims behind this stationary knife. they must be replaced in the same order! this can be difficult but just have good lights so you see whats going on. you do not want this knife to protrude out beyond the rail or you can cause crossing the knives and destrroy the machine. if you want to change shims, do this only on the plunger knife. If you do not have a bale thrower, you might as well pull the plunger out the rear. Disconnect at the crank bearing, juggle and pull wilth a long rod or similar. one reason to pull the plunger to work on the knife is to inspecr the bearings and other hidden goodies. By the way you will want to loosen the left side horizontal bearing before pulling the plunger. you want to learn how to do this anyway because this bearing runs on a rail that holds the plunger tight to the right allowing a good sissor cut. you can adjust this bearing without sharpening knifes and probabbly will get a much better cut and use less power. hope i've helped. this is mostly explained in any NH manual. most plungers are similar although the bearing placement and locations are slightly different. remember that horizontal bearing is reached through a little door near the lh tire. Loosen the 1 1/8 nut and the eccentric dog is tapped with a punch to further loosen. Other NH facts. check the feeder chain tightness. they must be tight! check the book. also check the feeder drive chain in the lh side. that also needs to bne tight!
