I've been looking around for a used 3 bottom plow. Does anyone have any opinions regarding the advantages and disadvantages of a semi-mount plow vs a 3 pt. plow. I'm new at this so any opinions/experiences will be appreciated.

Out here in the Corn Belt semi-mounted 3-bottom plows are rare as hens teeth. You can easily find used semi-mounted 4-bottom and bigger, and they are relatively cheap because so few farmers are plowing anymore. You did not say what tractor you had. It makes a difference, as someone else pointed out. For big-acre plowing the semi-mount is preferred and better. Mike

depends on your tractor. If your 3-point senses draft from the toplink, a semi-mounted plow, which does not use a toplink, will not be able to take advantage of load and depth control. A mounted plow would be better. If you have draft sensing from the lower links, then a semi-mount would be fine.

Be aware that many 3-point fully mounted plows do not have much trash clearance, because they must be compact from end to end to keep the weight close to the tractor (which keeps the front wheels on the ground). A lot of later semi-mounts have more generous trash clearance, which will make easier plowing if you have to turn a lot of stuff under.

Unless you're plowing garden patches, I would go with the semi-mount. I know some brands are difficult to back as mentioned previously. I had an Oliver semi-mount that you could back anywhere you wanted. The semi-mount can do a smoother job plowing in dead furrows, too.

I have used both a fully mounted 3x12 on an A/C WD and a semi-mounted 5x16 on an 806 International. Both have their advantages. The fully mounted plow is very handy, and if you are plowing small patches it is ideal for backing into corners. It is also, at least on the A/C, very compact. The semi-mounted plow, on the other hand, extended a lot further back, both because of the mount and the tail wheel. It also, on the IH, required a remote cylinderyou would drop the front into the ground, then the back. When you got into the rhythm, you could make a really neat headland. You couldnt back it up, though, because the tailwheel would cock immediately and push it to one side. It may have been a peculiarity of the IH plow, but if you turned left with the plow out of the ground, it would curl in behind you and follow very closely. If you turned right, it would hold itself straight back almost like a rigid extension of the tractor. My boss, who used it less than I did, once lambasted the fender of his old Ford pickup turning around. It was one of those Oh Well moments.

For open ground, you would probably want the semi-mounted plow. For tight places and detail work, the fully mounted would be handier.

Get the steerable [semi-mount]. The weight of the plow is divided between the tractor and the tail wheel of the plow.
