A friend got a new spreader and will give me his old one (we have a few llamas so don't need much). It is a ground drive, decent shape but there is a cast part (has teeth and turns hitting a lever that advances the apron) that is worn and needs something done. In one spot the teeth are so worn that with a load the apron won't advance. It works with no or very small load. Can the teeth be built back up with a material hard enough to be expected to last a few more years?? (the piece is cast). Is this something a welding shop could do or will it take a full machine shop?? He doesn't know the brand (he got it used with multiple layers of paint), but could a replacement part be found if we can determine what it is??

Thanks for any advice.

I had nearly the same problem. Took the sprocket to a welder and had him build up the teeth. The block of steel that pushes the sprocket was also worn on the corner so I had that built up too. Everything is working fine now.

BTW, I bought my spreader at sears. It is an "Estate" spreader made somewhere in Ohio. If you have heard of the company I would appreciate a full name or address, city or something. Sears has been less than helpful on getting parts.

Bill, Take off the shields and wheel so you can see the roller on the arm actually mesh with the cam. Have some one move the lever to the and make sure the roller is going down in the cams valley all the way. If it is going down all the way you probably have other problems, Your pawls may not be catching the ratchet wheel,You may have a bad spring. If it is not going all the way way there should be an adjustment on the rod that comes back from the lever. I also doubt that your cam is worn that much as I work on 20 to 30 spreaders a year and have yet to see that. If you want to identify what it is call me or e-mail with some part numbers.

There should be some adjustment on how far the arm drops to make the next ratchet. On spreaders that I have seen it would take an incredible amount of wear to not operate if the adjustment is made. Does it move more or better if you move the lever to "full" speed? If so, adjustment may correct it. If you can find the brand, especially if it is a New Idea spreader, yes you can get parts. Probably if it is IH, New Holland or John Deere. If it is some obscure brand, good luck.
