What U think?

Have an old MF 10 baler that I've had a few months and have been trying to get running reliably. Latest broken part is called the 'knotter hook' in the manual, but I think most folks call it the bill hook.

MF dealer wants $80 for a new hook. An implement salvage yard in Colorado wants $125 for one used knotter assembly out of a junker #10.

What do you think--get the used knotter assembly (sight unseen, plus shipping 1/2 way across U.S., though it may have other usable parts in it) or a new knotter hook (more than 1/2 the price of the used assembly, but it's new and I can have it in a day)?

thanks for your opinions and reasoning!
Tom

That same bill hook was used on several units including NH 66, S66 and 67. The MF 10 wasn't the best baler MF made and that still isn't saying much. Even if you got a second parts baler (which you could do for less money) I am not sure you would be happy with the results. But if you just want hay that resemble a square to put in the barn, I'd go with a parts machine. Trust me, you WILL be needing more parts. Where are you located? I have a NH parts baler and another complete knotter assembly. E-mail me by clicking on my name. I am in southern Indiana.

Here in southern MN you might be able to buy a whole baler for that money. Saw a couple of well worn NH go for under $150 this week, and non-NH/JD balers rarely bring $75.

Might want to shop around, & pawn yours off to another greenhorn?

If you have confidence that the new part is the last piece of the puzzle then go that way. At least you know what you're getting.

But if it turns out to be one more step to yet another bill, then add up what the thing has already cost you and decide whether it's worth the fight.

A usable Deere or NH might be a better idea in the long run.

Personally, I would not do either. Go to some auctions. Small square balers have been selling for under 75.00 in this are (central Minn.) To show you I am serious, I have the complete knotter assembly out of a MF 124 that you can have free. (You find out if it/they will work and pay shipping.)
