I'm looking at buying a JD #9 sickle bar. This type of mower is gear driven and I'm interested to see what folks think about them. We have a 53 Ford Golden Jubilee and I'm told this will work on the tractor! The gentleman wants $250 for the mower. Is this a good price? What should I look for as potential problems. Cant see the bar in action so I'm nervous about buying. Can parts be purchased??

Thanks for the help!

I paid $100 USD this spring and put about $75 in for new bar, seal and guards. I run it behind my 8N. Cuts my pasture mowing time way down from the 5 ft brush hog. Definetly get the manual. I got mine by phone. Don't have # here but will look it up and post when I get home.

You can order a manual from JD at 1-800-522-7448.
Have your credit card handy. ~$16.00 total.

You should go to a Deere dealer and get the owners and parts manual. The owners manual will tell you how to be sure the thing is set up correctly and so on. They don't cost much.

The farm stores have most of the common parts or you can mail order them from people other than Deere if you prefer.

When I got our $225 9W, the clamps weren't with it. I moved the clamp support where it needed to be and hot-bent some redi-rod into u bolts as appropriate. They still are working fine.

One thing that has helped has been to make a parking cradle for the thing, so when it's unhooked it doesn't go flop on the ground. Makes it much easier to unhook/hook up next time. Made mine out of scrap 2x4's etc.

I have a #9 mower and I highly recomend one. Most bar parts can be bought from places like Tractor Supply as well as a divider board. I really like mine and I have cut stuff that was over 3 Ft. tall. Good luck.

I was given a #9 mower by my aunt. I had to put $100 into a new driveshaft since she had lost hers. I have bought pitman sticks from the JD dealer as well as a ledger plate and I was told the grass board was still available from JD, but the price made me go cut one out of a piece of scrap plywood. I use mine behind a Ford 800 series. My aunt used it behind an 8N. At first I thought it wouldn't fit because the square u-bolts that clamp around the tractor lift arms were too narrow to fit around the arms. Later, after looking at it for months I figured out that the clamping thingy can slide up and down on its arm so all I had to do was loosen it up, slide it down to where the lift arm tapers enough to get the u-bolts around it. Works much better now! (duh). I have bought replacement knife sections from C.A.L. Ranch locally. I'm curious as to why you can't see the bar in action? On mine, if you lower the blade to the cutting position and turn the driveshaft by hand the knife will slide back and forth very easily. Email me if you need more info. btw, the manual is still available also. Came in real handy for me 'cause I ain't too bright sometimes! 8^)
