Was this baler a dependable machine? PTO drive, twine tie, always shedded...I looked it over and its looks to be in very good shape. The guy wants $700 for it. Is it worth the money? What years were these built.

I bought a MF 10 a few months ago for $500 (my first baler). The 10 was the model just prior to the 12, and was manufactured for a few years from '65. I'm told the models are very similar.

So far, I'd buy it again, but I've learned a lot already. First, get the manual *before* you try to use it! Mine jumped time (drive chains were way too loose) and broke both needles. Manual is available from local MF dealer for about $5, but it took 5 weeks to get mine.

Also, it seems that most parts are available from the dealer (including needles), though not all: right now I'm looking for one which is not (knotter hook; apparently they don't break often, so MF doesn't make 'em anymore). It broke through my own stupidity, not through fault of the machine.

good luck,
Tom

David-
That might be a good baler. I looked at a 12 and a 10 Massey. Both shedded, both used. The fellow selling them was a Massey mechanic and well known for his honesty and hard work. He asked $400 for the 10 and $600 for the 12. I bought the 10 no haggling for price and it has run well for me the last two years. My last $150 baler blew up on the third bale (out of time and the plunger shattered the needles). Best wishes, Jim
