Well, Blair, that depends. If you're really concerned about weeds, and want a lawn that looks like a PGA green, I can't help ya. However, if what you're looking for is a reasonably level, mowable nice looking average lawn, I can give ya a couple of pointers. If you want to start from scratch, use a disk harrow or a rototiller to grind up the existing sod, down to about 6 inches or so. Let the sod rot down and decompose for a week or so, then level things out. If it's REALLY choppy, you'll probably want to use a box blade. If it's just kind of uneven, you can use a landscaping rake, sometimes called a rock rake. When you have it leveled out to your satisfaction, check with your local seed and feed for advice how much and what kind of fertilizer and lime (if any) to use. Then run over it lightly with the landscaping rake to mix the fertilizer and lime in, and seed it with a grass mix suitable to your area. Finally, roll it to ensure good contact between seed and soil. I also use straw mulch to keep the moisture in, and cut down on birds robbing the grass seed. Keep it moist but not muddy, and you should have a dandy lawn in about 4 weeks.
