Need disc advice

I need to get a disc this weekend. I've never purchased one before (used what I could borrow and I'm sick of borrowing!). I will use it behind a '51 Farmall M to work an equestrian arena as well as for prepping my paddocks for reseeding this fall. The one I used to use was an older, 2-row 8' that you could adjust by lifting a handle and backing up (not a 3-point). I have since converted the M to a 3-point hitch. My local implement dealer has a couple he'd like to sell me that are 3-point and fixed (takes a couple wrenches and elbow power to change the angle) What should I look for in buying a new one or even a newer used one? How big should I go? Any advice would be appreciated!

For doing an arena, the "drag" type or "wheel" type will work best. The 3pt disc wasn't made for turning the corner of an arena. Granted, you could lift it and back it in, but you will get tired of doing this real quick.

I have a 9' Kewanee hydraulic disc I use behind a Allis WD45. While the tractor has plenty of power to pull the disc, the disc itself is just not heavy enough to cut. We run horses on cornstalks over the winter and by spring, they have the ground packed so hard, I make 2 or 3 passes to get it loosened up. I can't believe a 6' or 8' 3-point disc would be effective especially if livestock has packed the ground.

To be honest, farmers have given up on disks because they pack too much. The wetter the ground, the worse it is. We all keep one around to chop up cornstalks or lumpy dry ground, and use the field cultivator for real ground prep.

I graze stalks too, and run a disk, then the field cultivator on it in spring.

Your M can handle anything up to about 12' wide with ease. A wheel-type hydraulic-lift disk is extremely convenient. Older equipment of this type in good shape is getting harder to find. Look for broken disks and bent frames. Also make sure all axles rotate freely, and that the bearings look like they've been greased at some time! One tell-tale thing to look for is MISSING GREASE FITTINGS! This can be more common than you might imagine on older tillage equipment. If the fitting is gone, it hasn't been greased lately!

I have no experience with a 3pt disk behind an M. I would think it would work okay.

Sounds like good advise to me.

I'm biased - I don't think any of the 3-point disks made in the past 20 years are worth anything. Light weight & useless. But I haven't even used one, I just don't see how they actually are useful....

I have a 12 foot single 3-point Ford or Dearborn (who knows, too old for serial plates or ID) that I use a lot to work up wet spots or small spots. I'd pay 10 times the money for one of those, compared to those flimsy little 6' new 3-point things I see at the farm supply stores.

But that is just my bias - maybe I'm all wrong.
