What is the right direction to rake hay? Turn the windrow away from the fence line on the first pass then turn around and rake the windrow back & keep going in this direction or do you turn around again and rake in the direction you started? I have a NH super 55 ground driven side delivery rake. I'm turned around here & going in circles! -- help me.

basically, mow in a clockwise direction and rake in a counter-clockwise direction. there are as many ways to rake as there are people raking. everyone has their own way. expierment and use what works best for you.

Most of the time it doesn't make much difference, a lot of guys around here mow a couple rounds a day early, bale them out of the way, & just go back & forth with the bulk of the field, no circles.

If you are following a mower, it is better to go in the same direction as the mower, or some short hay might not be picked up. I don't see much difference which direction following the mo-co.

If you are doing circles, I find it better to spiral in, then spiral back out. It is easier to make nice corners when throwing the hay outward. Throwing the hay inward, & the corners bunch up & get too sharp to follow with the baler.

It depends how thick or heavy your hay is. I double all my windrows, rake the first one in then turn around and rake the next one out or into it. Make sure, if you do it this way, the rake goes over all the cut hay or the pickup on the baler might not pick it up if it hasen't been raked. Have fun.

The right way is however the guy who's baling wants it, since its harder to bale than rake. Since in my case I'm both people, here's what I do. Rake two rows around the perimeter to the outside. Then rake the rest in rows the long way. Then go back and rake the perimeter windrows to the inside. That way I can reach the outside windrows easily and bale them first. After that I can turn on the ends and easily get the other windrows, and I don't get dizzy chasing those little round windrows at the center of the field with a tractor, baler and kicker wagon. If one end of your field has been previously baled, don't rake across that end. You already have plenty of room to turn on that end. That's what works for me.
