Help I need a manul for IH baler. I bought it last fall at an auction, and it worked fine. However upon using it this spring it has developed a problem with the knotters. It will bale fine for a few bales, then it starts double stringing, and breaking twine. I have tried various brands of twine, a complete cleaning, and diffeent bale tension setting without success. I bought the baler cheap, and rely on it for putting up hay on my small acreage for my horses, and other stock. I tried the local Case/IH dealer, but no luck in finding manual. Thanks

I have a model 46 and was experiencing the same problem. I noticed the knotter knives were not cutting the twine very well so I replaced the knives ($1.40 each) and it has solved my problem. I hope this will help.

SELL IT FIRST CHANCE YOU HAVE. IF NOT, PAD THE

TOP OF THE TWINE BOXES AND HIRE TO PEOPLE TO TIE

THE STRING AS THE BALES COME OUT.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I have sharpened my knotter cutoff blades, and changed back to good quality sisal twine. Now I am waiting on a few good weather days to cut and play with a little hay.

Lazyhorse I have an IH 46 and have had similar problems. Yes do look at the twine knives for sharpness and also look and see if the cutting edge is worn to the point where it appears as a hook. It should be staight across and very sharp. If you need new knives only buy them from the dealer as a last resort, try to find some junkers. I have a spare set I bought for $10, just in case. You will be absolutely amazed at how mush trouble the twine knives can cause for you. If you just have one knotter that is hanging up then adjust the twine knife as needed. To do that get a good supply of flat washers and add or sutract washers fron the bolts that hold the knife on the knotter. So shim it out or in as needed. You will have to run some hay through it to test it. There are specs in the manual but remember you're dealing with a 40 - 50 year old machine. Also I buy my twine at Farm and Country the 9000' rolls. It seems to work pretty good. Never bale hay that is the least bit damp and keep your windrows lite. I bale in 2nd gear with a 49 8N and it works just fine. I do not pull a wagon behind.Make sure your baler strokes are about 68-72 per minute.Note that your baler chamber tension is not too tight. So you should have about 1 and 7/16 of thread showing above your baler chamber tensioner springs. I bought my baler manual reprint at my Case/IH dealer for about $17. They are available. I also have info(I think) that is just about the knotters only. If you need it let me know I'll send you a copy.

These balers had a rotten reputation, but with a bit of tuning they would run like clocks. Do what the other fellows suggest, but a few other things, do not under any circumstances, run it at PTO speed, slow it down, don't bog the tractor and the big one, get the twine from your IH dealer. I don't know if they still have it, but the only twine that seemed to work with these things was IH 9000' twine.

Try, Binder Books. Their quality and price seem to be better than some others.
