After spending months off and on rejuvenating an ancient 3 point cement mixer, I finally poured a couple of small slabs this past week. Here's what I learned:

#1: It takes more bags of cement than you think.

#2: 3 bags of cement in the mixer is too much!

#3: Add cement and water gradually. If you do it too quick it will bog down.

#4: The lifting arms of the mixer need to go outside the lifting arms of the tractor (you'd have to have one of these beasts to know what I mean) otherwise the tractor hydraulics will bend the crap out of the mixer frame. Then you have to stop, take everything apart and pound it back out straight (or a reasonable facsimile thereof).

It's all fun if you don't take it too serious.

Another thing I learned: You can't operate a pto cement mixer at 540 pto rpm. It acts like the spin cycle on a washing machine, all the cement stays stuck to the sides. It needs to move slower to mix properly.

Should be 30 shovel fulls of gravel plus 30 of sand to 1 bag of cement per batch. Add cement when half of the stuff is in. If you can find my old posts reread those. I have put 14 yards of concret through mine working by myself.

Looking for a Transmix or other way to mix larger batches of clay, straw and sand mixture for infill between beams of historic barn renovation. My mortar mixer is too small and straw is tough on it. Thanks M
