Need Help with Ridger

I want to ridge some pastures to not only keep my irrigation confined, but also to keep my neighbor's irrigation out.. (it's a long story)
Anyway, can I just use the ridger on the hard ground, or do I need to disc first? I picked up an old ridger for a good price, but I don't want to overwork it.
Thanks,
Chuck (CA)

In our country they call them a ridger or levee plow or hiller plow.

The reason I said that is that it's according to which type you have and what horse power you have to pull it with. Any of the 3 plows are heavy duty enough to use by itself if the ground is'nt clay.

If you have clay or heavy compacted soil you maybe should disc or turn it 1st.

Either way it would make a better levee if you disc 1st, but you don't have to.

Sorry for the slow response, Burrhead. Thanks for the help. FYI, I'm using a Ferguson TO30. Kinda small, but it's all I got.. This ridger or whatever you call it has 2 sets of double discs about 30" apart and they're set at about 45 degrees. Used to be a time you could adjust the distance between the sets of discs, but the locknuts have rusted to the point that I can't get them loose. Again, thanks for the info.

Dad picked up an interesting relic at an auction years ago, I've never seen anything like it, & we've never actually used it. Knowing dad, it had to sell cheap.

Anyhow, it's a 1 bottom plow with a transmission which runs (by pto) a vertical auger right behind the bottom. Obviously is sprays the dirt away.

What would this thing be called?

That plow with the powered auger was called a "Whirlwind Terracer" back in the '40 s. It took some time, but you could put up a pretty good terrace with it.

We have some thing kind of like that here but it does'nt have a transmission. This thing is a trencher for running around larger trees on a tree farm to prepare them to transplant.

This one digs a trench about 12" wide and 12" deep that cuts shallow roots and then you fertilize and water in the trench. You can't get close enough to the tree with a big tractor to use a rip or chisel plow and the trencher will work with a smaller utility tractor.
