Having a few problems with my 66, had to replace a needle from a donor machine. It seems that there are both a right and left needle. one side is straight all the way down and the other side is straight until about mid point and then tapers down. Which side faces the other needle? After reading other messages, it also seems that the needle holes should be round and not have a groove running down from the hole. is this correct? i'm beginning to wonder if maybe $75 was too much for a used baler...

Your friendly NH dealer should have an owners manual and parts book available at a nominal price. They are well worth it.

My relationship with our 66 was sort of like the girl that didn't quite work out. Started out swell but got progressively more expensive and frustrating. Finally I went elsewhere. Like to a NH 68, which has been a very good machine indeed for what we wanted.

The big problem with ours was that it was just plain worn out. Things got to the point that it wasn't worth shoveling any more new parts into it. A lot of them fit on the 68, though, so it wasn't all bad.

There have been a lot of posts saying the 66 is a good machine, and that's probably true if there's some life left in one at all. So don't give up quite yet.

Naw you'll be ok with the price :O).

The left and right needles should be the same needle exactly. Sounds like somebody picked up a needle out of the spare pile and replaced one from another baler.

You can use different NH needles and some MF needles but you have to replace them in pairs so they match.

The groove in the needle is for adjustment purposes. The groove should be there.

The needle will only go in place with the needle facing towards the back when the carrier is in the home position so I don't understand the direction of needle question.

If you don't have a NH book you might want to scroll back down to where B.C. and some of us were telling the man how to adjust his needles and time his baler.

The directions we gave were on a 68SHL NH and a MF baler but the directions are the same as far as adjustments go.

Good luck and happy haying--BH
