I have an old manure spreader I think. It is old enough that the wheels are all steel. It appears to be in remarkably good condition, the chains are all there, the wheels turn, etc. I am wandering the value of this thing. I can probably get pictures of it but am wandering if anyone can tell me anything about it now? The only thing bad is the wooden box is rotted away. Is 2500 dollars to much for something like this??

Last year at an auction, I saw an old McCormick Deering horse spreader (4-steel wheels) with all its steel parts there and in good condtion (except missing the seat) but no wood in it (somebody had removed all the wood in an aborted restoration attempt) sell for $5.00. Around here, $2500 will buy you a good used tandem axle spreader that's around 15 years old. The only old spreaders that I have seen go high (and they must be A-1 excellent) are New Idea 12 and 14A, JD L, and McCormick 100 and 200 spreaders. Seems the small stable owners like these ground driven machines, but ONLY if they are completely restored and look like new. Then they might fetch $1000 or so. But most old spreaders go for scrap . . . . .

You would need to describe it a bit more, the pictures would of course be perfect. :) Is it 2 wheels, or 4 wheels? Is there any color left on it, or better yet do you know the brand? How many beaters are in back, one, 3, somewhere in between? Does the whole floor move, or are there slats (angle iron) on the chains?

If it would be a JD it might be worth a bit more to a collector, maybe $50-100. I'm not sure if you are trying to sell or buy?

I don't know much about it at all. It has 4 steel wheels, the rear are larger in diameter. It has angle iron across the chains. It has an auger type device on the rear mounted horizontally and a roller with spikes just in front of that. I can try to get some pictures of it. It has been in the back of a field for a long time and there is no color to it. I will cut it out of the weeds and get some decent pictures soon. It is mine and I want to sell it.

That sounds like the kind of McCormick Deering horse drawn spreader that we sold to an individual in NM for $300.00. Ours was about a 1940 model, had a galvanized box, and could be pulled with horses or with a tractor. Ours had three beaters and a drag chain that used angle irons to move the load. Ours had two levers at an angle on the front of the box. The lever on the left side engaged the beaters and the lever on the right side engaged the drag chain. It had a seat that would fold down on the platform where the operator placed his feet when using a team of horses or mules to pull the spreader. It was a good spreader. The buyer raises mules and plans on using them to pull the spreader.

Auger type beater? Spiked roller ahead of beater?
Sounds like a Deere to me!
