Old Hay Trolley

We're having a banner year for hay (up to the peak of the barn).. so I took the opportunity to get the old hay trolley down that's been up there... (probably) since the barn was built.

It's casting says 'Milwaukee Improved Reversible' and has... "Pat'd Aug 5th 1884" cast on the top yoke.

The question of the hour is... should I restore it (repaint) or just clean and oil it ?

My instinct tells me that there's probably lots of them around and it doesn't have much 'antique' value.... but some of you guys probably know more about this than I do...

(It looks like it was painted black at one time...)

Thanks for any advice.

Wise of you to ask, I would leave it alone unless it is going on the wall as decoration never to be sold. Where are you? I love old barns.(my only credential) Whats a bale of hay bring these days?

Extreme Northwestern California (1/4 mile from ocean), 45 miles from the Oregon border...

Good quality hay is about $2 a bale right now.... rougher stuff is about $1.50

Depending on what kind of fall and winter we have, those prices will go up .75 to 1.00 by
January.

70# bale of 4th cutting pure alfalfa in western Iowa can bring $ 4.50. (At least it did last year and I'm justifying junk machinery restoration on that price!) 3rd cutting was $3.25, 2nd $2.50 and 1st sold for $ 1.50 in the field. Dick

My prices were for good old vanilla flavored grass hay... 40-60# bales.

We don't get enough heat were I live to do decent alfafa... a nice summer day here is 65 to 70 degrees... that's about the best she does.

(sigh ?)
