Which Brand Rotary Cutter?

I've located a dealer who sells Bush Hog, Rhino and Woods. I'm looking for a 5 foot 3 point rotary cutter and the SQ600, SE5 and MD160 are in about the same price range. The dealers comment was that his customers seem to have the fewest problems with the Squealer. I was wondering what our Forum readers have experienced with these or other equivalent models.

This morning I bought a 6' heavy duty brush hog, it is called "Big Bee Rotary" I never heard of it but the company is DHE. This mower has chain skirts, front and rear and is rated for over 30 HP. I bought it from the New Holland dealer where I bought my NH tractor, they are going out of business August 30th and they were asking $1600 for the unit, we dickered and I got it for $1250.
Does anyone know of a mower or equipment made by DHE?

Pete, I don't know about the Rhino's but, around here a lot of folks have had good luck with the Bush Hog brand cutters. If you need any help or info. just e-mail them and they will call you right back with the solution or answer. I personally have a old Woods M-5 cutter (I have other BH brand implements) that has cut up a quite a few flint rock and a lot 2" stuff. Never had a problem with it and I bought it used for $350..

Why do they call them ALL Bush Hogs????? ??? The new Squealers (SQ 600, 720, etc) are much better than the old series, (SQ 48,60,72). Even they were better than most COMPARABLE units. Woods uses an asinine (IMHO) design on many of their gearboxes (see my post to Wardner's above) that will prevent me from ever recommending one of their cutters. Bush Hog parts are readily available, relatively cheap, and there are dealers all over most areas. If the squealers look too light, look at a 200 series BH.

Only a comment, I see a lot of squealers junked at auction. Mostly gear box problems. If you have a 30 HP tractor or less you may be O K. If you can justify the expense move up to a cutter with at least a 50% higher HP rated gearbox than your tractor can deliver.

ltf,

I appreciate your comments. The dealer was pleasant enough but some of his remarks were inconsistent. He panned the Woods (which he carried) but suggested that weight and gearbox rating should be a good guide. The Woods MD160 should have won hands down in that case. He didn't have an SE5 (Rhino) to look at. I think I've seen at least one other negative remark about the Squealer on this Forum but there were no details.

The price range seems to be $950 to $1400 for five foot cutters in the light / medium duty range. For that kind of money, is there a brand you would pick over the Squealer?

I just purchased a JD model 613 brush hog. I traded in a Howse brand unit. I priced Bush Hog brand, JD, and King Kutter. I chose the JD. For a unit the Bush Hog dealer said was medium duty capable of cutting 2 inch brush and equipped with slip clutch and safety chains they were asking $1,600.00. For a medium duty JD capable of cutting 2 inch brush with slip clutch and safety chains the Deere dealer was asking $1,050.00. After trading in my Howse unit the difference was $850.00. I priced the King Kutter 6 foot heavy duty model at Tractor Supply Co. and they were asking $895.00 with no trade accepted. Also, all these units were 6 foot models.

Hi Kermit,

That's a decent price - for both units. The KK HD sounds about the least expensive for something that size with a slip clutch. I can see why you'd go for the deal that took a trade and I hear good things about the JD units.
