Looking at possibly buying an old John Deere Mower, and would like to know if anyone can tell us the approximate value of it. It's an old horse-drawn mower with cast seat, tool box, and cast hubs that read "Big No. 4" (assuming that is the model of it). Not sure of exact year...1930's or 1940's? If someone could tell us approx what these old mowers are worth out there...would be a big help. This one is in good condition...still paint left on it too.

To work horse people, like myself, this mower would be worth a lot, if in good condition. The JD Big No. 4 is generally recognized as one of the two or three "best" horse drawn mowers ever produced, the other two being McCormick-Deering's No. 7 and No. 9 (especially the No. 9). I'm no expert, but if it was in "restorable" condition, I'd say anywhere between $100-$200 dollars. If it is in "working" condition, I'd say $200-$400. If it was "restored", with new cutter sections and rock guards, new bearings, timed, etc., you could be talking close to $1000. These machines are marvels of technology, not just "in their day", but even now, in the 21st century. To see one of these restored mowers cut is poetry in motion.
Good luck!

A big second to what Jim said. In Holmes County, Ohio, a hotbed of horse farming, the three mowers Jim mentioned, including the John Deere Big 4, are much in demand, and bring big bucks.

If they are that much in demand then they must be worth more than that. I have one in good working condition and I wouldn't even consider that as a reasonable offer. I have been told they were manufactured in the mid 1920's.
