If you intend to use the planter, I would skip the 490, and find a 495. The 490 used gear boxes to adjust the ammount of seed planted, and the 495 could be had without the boxes, it used a series of sprokets and a chain to adjust the rate. I never had any problems with the 495 or my 895, but my neighbor had to work on his gear box from time to time. I planted far more acres than me did with fewer problems. As both machines are worth not much more than scrap price, I wouls hold out for one without the bearbox.

ED, if you're interested, I have a 490 that I would consider parting out, and it has hydraulic lift. Just let me know. Mike

The 490 had a built in mechanical lift (somewhat like a plow clutch) The planter had to be in forward motion to lift or lower ( the latter to keep from plugging the shoes when it dropped). A hydraulic lift was optional and any 8" stroke ASAE cylinder will work. I had a 490, just watch for broken lift chains, otherwise a pretty good old planter (emphasis on old, they stopped making them in the mid 50s)
