The guy cutting my grandma's place wants to round bale this year, apparantly, with the rain they've been having this year it's faster to put up with less labor, and the hay can be baled at a higher moisture content? Anyway, I can take a share out of this, but I will be feeding it to horses. My question is,do the round bales have a higher incidence of mold problems? I realize conditions would differ depending on weather, etc. but does anyone have experiance with,or suggestions on feeding horses with round bales?
I'll have to deal with the transport problems, but that can be managed. The area is in the northeast.
Thanks, gs

Hello george. I found the pictures of a home made hay rake, but I don't know how to scan a picture of it. When I can figger it out I'll post you a pic.

The round bales do indeed have more mold and spoilage, but if the round bales are cured right and baled right you should'nt have any problems tho.

I have'nt ever had any problems with the round bales and hosses.
I keep round bales out for my cattle, but I keep my hosses in the same pastures. I don't do anything special with the hosses and they do alright eatng hay with the cows.

If you have enough shed space to put them in or cover them with a tarp or visqueen would be better than just leaving them out in the weather.

I cover sometimes with visqueen. The plastic or a tarp either one will sweat a little bit onto the bales it touches, but it usually aint no big deal.

Thanks, Thats about what I figured,I havn't seen the stuff yet but now I'm thinking of letting them have all that first cutting, and getting a chunk of the second cut.Looks like things are drying up now,and I'll have more time to deal with it later.
If you figure out the picture thing I'd like to see what you discovered. The one I made is a variation of a horse drawn dump rake,on a 3 point hitch.Works after a fashion, but it needs some improving, course I'm only in to it for about 20 bucks so I guess I can afford to play with it.
