Hi again folks and thanks for your earlier responses. I have tried the mower now and have a couple more questions...

1. How can I stop the Pitman end coming off its ball every 10 minutes? How should I lubricate this joint? How tight should it be? Paradoxically it seems to last better if it's set loose... wierd...

2. When I raise the mower (eg for reversing) the pitman seems to catch on the mower frame. Is there a way to avoid this? I don't have live PTO, so I can't raise the mower and have it stopped unless I disconnect the shaft.

Many thanks

J-P

J-P 1. That end of the Pitman should be spring loaded, to the extent it takes a drift pin , or something similar to pry it off the ball to change blades. And should be lubricated with a heavy oil.
2.You need to adjust the linkage on your mower lift so it won't raise that high. You'll be breaking Pitmans otherwise.I assume it is a hydraulic lift? Maybe devise a stop on the hydraulic lever. Hope this helps.

Tim you need to replace the jaws on the pitmam clamp or the ball end on the knife.if it were me doing this I would replace both. When it keeps coming off as often as you say they are both wornout. As for the pitman hitting the mower frame ,the bushings might need replaced,or the pins or bolts are wornout letting the bar move to far forward when you lift it up.To check to see if it is to loose ,when the bar is on the ground take hold of the outer shoe and pull it towards the front of the tractor if the pitman bar hits the frame it is to loose and needs to be tightned up with new pins, bolts and bushings. Please let me know if this is the problem.
