I just purchased an old dearborn sickle mower for my 8n tractor. I replaced all the blades but not the blade guides. I started mowing the first pass of my 5 acres. 3/4 away around the field it suddenly strarted plugging up. It had cut great up til that point. I have tried adding shims to loosen the hold down plates- had them pretty tight to start with. I do not have a manual and am in need of advice so I can finish mowing the field.

The knife sections have to shear the grass off by sliding across the "ledger plates" in the rock guards (guides). It's not like a rotary mower that just flails. If either the knife sections or plates are dull, loose, or not held together the mower will plug. Try to get an owner's manual for other adjustments. There are several related to the geometry of the bar that could be the problem. Keep ground speed and PTO speed up. A grass board at the end of the bar helps if the grass is tall. Some species of grass are a pain to cut anyway.

I think part of the problem has been my v belt. I tightened the belt and it cut good for 100 feet. Then as the belt (which is old) warmed up and became looser, the hay started catching in the sickle blades and the belt started slipping. Pretty soon the blade would not move and the belt got even hotter and looser. I will purchase a new belt tomorrow.

If you are cutting grass you must have smooth blades on your sickle. The serrated ones grab the grass and pull it into the guards which then plug up.
