Dad recently bought an old walk-behind plow (not sure exactly what kind etc), and he was thinking of painting it and having it as a yard ornament. All the pictures we could find of these plows are black and white, so we cannot tell how they were painted (or if they were) in their day. Can anyone tell me--were they painted, and if they were....were they black...or if it was John Deere were they painted green & yellow? I've searched the net as much as I could to find pictures of plows (John Deere), but cannot find anything in color. Any info on this would be appreciated.

My brother has a new old stock John Deere walking (horse drawn) plow. John deere made a zillion different ones and painted them differently, but this is a Syracuse model 402 plow ( the beam is a 107) and it was painted a very dark red, handles and beam and everything but the plow bottom. The bottom looks to have been coated or painted black. On the outside of the right handle, reading down is a four legged deer emblem and then the words "use genuine repairs" are stencilled on in letters about an inch high or maybe 1 1/4". We knew the dealer and know this is the way rhe plow was received, with the handles wired to the beam for shipping so I'm sure that's the way THIS one was painted. Hope this helps. Bob
