Does anyone know anythng about these types of binders? I would like to know where the serial number is located, if any. Also, are there any sources for parts and restoration help? What would the value of these things be if they were restored? I am trying to decide if I should attempt to restore one of the three sitting on the family farm. Thanks.

There's no serial number. Deere made ground-driven corn binders up to about 1950. From '46 to '50, the ground drive machine was available with a tractor hitch. Parts books and owner's manuals are available from Deere, but most parts aren't. I restored one with a tractor hitch about four years ago. It was a lot of work. All the wood was rotted and needed replaced. I tore it down completely, and there are a LOT of parts in a corn binder.
It works good now. I use it every year to cut about an acre of corn for a local fair, where corn chopping with an old Blizzard silo filler is demonstrated.
Make sure you get the books, and make a lot of drawings of how every sub-assembly comes apart. Otherwise, it'll be like the proverbial Chinese puzzle when it comes time to put it back together.

Sam, thanks for the info. I was able to find an old John Deere repair catalog from 1936 at a tractor show here a few weeks back. It has the corn binder and a whole lot more. Not a bad deal for only $15. It lists all the parts and part numbers and even several photos of a disassembled unit to show where these parts go. These photos are not in the owner's manual, nor in the parts manual. If worse comes to worse, I do have two other binders I can use as a guide. Do you have a template for the wood parts? Mine are completely gone also. How do you know what year these binders were built? One of mine has a pneumatic tire on it, the others have steel. Is the restoration on this any harder than completely stripping down an F-20 and restoring it piece by piece? That is what I'm doing right now. Thanks for the info.

John,
There was enough of the wood left on my binder that I was able to use the originals for patterns. I stuck all the original wood parts overhead in my barn, in case anyone, such as you, needed them for patterns. Unfortunately, my barn burned this past April 29th and, although the binder was in another barn, the old parts went to feed the fire. All the drawings I had made of how the various parts went together were destroyed as well.
The new barn is virtually completed, and will be nicer than its predecessor, but a lot of things are gone that can't be replaced.
As you have more than one JD corn binder, you can use them as models for how stuff goes together. I've restored a good many tractors, and I think implements, such as your corn binder, are more difficult. But, I also think they're more fun.
