Any thoughts on the pros. and cons. of a box scraper vs. an adjustable angle blade ? I will be mostly using it to keep my corall clean and stock pileing manure for composting and later spreading on the fields. Im thinking 6ft on a 841d powermaster thanks for any replys WRP

In my experience, a blade of any kind does not work well with manure that has bedding or hay scraps in it. The bedding/hay balls up under it, and nothing moves. I would go so far as to say it is just miserable to do this.

On the other hand, if you have fresh manure that is not a slurry, it can work ok for you. I'm not really sure how you will be spreading the compost in the field with a blade, but things are done differently in other parts of the country.

If it were me, I would be much happier with a loader.

PAUL,

TO ME IT SEEMS THE QUESTION IS DO YOU WANT TO LEVEL OUT MATERIAL OR MOVE IT ? A BOX CAN "CARRY" MATERIAL BUT A BLADE CAN NOT. AT TEH SAME TIME AN ADJUSTABLE BLADE CAN BE USED TO WINDROW MATAERIAL WHEREAS A BOX CANNOT. MY TWO CENTS WORTH.

Thanks for the comments . I should clarify that I do have a loader on the tractor. It's just muddy were the horses come in and out of the barn and in the rest of he corall in the winter. If I scrape the mud/manure there is hard pan underneath. Then I spread sawmill chips on top to keep there area some what dry (not easy in western WA.)Useing A blade keeps me from digging.I just drag the junk to a central area and then pile it up with the loader for composting(lets the seeds die) .Then in the spring i'll scoop and drop on the feild and harrow it in.I 've borrowed a friends back blade and was wondering if a box was that much better to justify the cost wich is almost double.Any thoughts on this? Thanks WRP

Regarding your mud hole; you might try replacing the wood chips with some sort of inorganic aggregate. Any sort of organic material (wood chips, sawdust, straw, etc) does do a good job soaking up the water, but then it proceeds to rot and only adds to the mud.

But then, you end up adding rocks to the fields when you haul out the manure...

We have a very sandy/shale hill, which is not good for much, but nice for the cow yard, as I can add a little drainage & not get the rocks in.

I've never used a box blade so probably not qualified to answer the original question. Always used the back blade for years.

I recently bought a 6' LandPride box scrapper and find it well made and worth every dollar.

As for your use, I would think a front loader would do you better at picking up and stock pileing while a manure spreader, spring rake or harrow would help more with spreading it out. Box blades are more for holding material together and controling the spread (like gravel for a road).

At the dairy, that I pass daily, they spread their "processed feed" by mixing it into a slurey, with a lot of water, and spraying it over the field with a trash pump rig. I have noticed that no children ever play in their sprinklers.

We use our boxscraper way more than the blade. You can do more with it although it will cost more to buy. The 6' size you call out sounds about right to me.
