Woods M5 mower repair

I am trying to repair a woods brush mower that a neighbor gave me after he seized it up by running the gearbox dry. The first problem that I am having is getting the blade bar off of the vertical shaft. I know that this is a dumb question, but is the bolt that holds this on left-handed? Also, this shaft seems to be really locked up solid. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting this thing apart so I can at least assess the damage. (The gears themselves look fine. I am hoping to get by with replacing bearings and seals.) Thanks for any advice.

I don't think the bolt is LH, it's just TIGHT! I had to use a 3' cheater on a 18" breaker bar, and then pull till my eyes pooched out.

The blade bar is a press fit once the bolt is out. I rigged a puller and did the old "tighten the puller, beat the bar with a big ol' hammer, cuss, repeat" drill for an hour or so, and it finally popped off.

Good luck...

Paul,
I did get the blade bar off with a puller, just like you described. Now I need to get the vertical shaft out. Do you know how that is held in? I think that mine is stuck in place from having been run dry of oil, but I would like to know what normally holds this in before I start banging on it to get it out.

Paul,
You were right. It was a right-handed bolt. I finally got it loose by heating it up a bit and then whacking my breaker bar with a sledge hammer. Next I guess I will need to repeat your routine with a puller to get the bar off. Thanks for the help.

I have a woods finsih mower. I found that they made an R 59 and L 59 model. Mine is a L 59 and it is definitely a left hand bolt.

The bolts that held my blades on were tight enough that an impact wrench would not turn it. I found heating the bolt with a torch allowed the bolts to come out.

When I put it back together I used Never Seize to avoid the stuck bolt problem next time.
