I just bought a j.d. 24t square baler. What would cause the plunger to keep getting out of time with the needles? It has sheared several flywheel pins because of the plunger hitting the safety stop because the needles aren't home in time. I used the opr. manual method to re time it but it keeps changing. Any suggestions?

My 14T did that last year and I discovered it had a missing roller. If you stand by the tire and look at the knotter assembly, the knotter furtherest away from you has a notch in the round casting. Underneath the knotter is a spring loaded arm that is supposed to have a roller that snnaps into this notch and keeps the knotters in the home position. The first time this happened to me I thought I picked up a rock and got it in the baler. Good luck.

See if your needle brake is holding the needles in the home position after it is returned. Have seen this be a problem before. Let us know what you find out. HB

We had a 14T that had enough wear on the timing chain and sprockets that would allow it to get out of time just enough to stop the plunger. My grandfather fussed over that baler for the longest time, working on this, that and the other thing, until finally he put a new chain on, and that pretty much solved the problem. Of course, not long after that, a knotter cradle casting broke in two, and the 14T ended up in the parts yard and we got a 336.

I forgot to mention that it has a new knotter drive chain and a new main timing chain. The brake seems to be working ok. After I set the timing according to the opr. manual the first time as soon as i turned the flywheel by hand i noticed the plunger moved appx. 2 inches before the needles,( which were entering the bale chamber,) began to move,is this normal or is something got some slop in it or slipping? (I appreciate everyone's input.)

Something like that would go on with the NH66 I used to fight with. Think I wound up fudging the timing a tooth or so on the first long chain, following the manual as best I could. Had trouble with it but got past the needle timing/blocking chorus.

I just remembered by the post of slipping the chain someone recomended that on the JD baler but I don't remember who. I think they moved it one or 2 teeth. It compensates for wear.

I'm not familiar with JD, but if you put a new chain on, did you put the right number of links in???
