Tumble plows and wood disk bearings

Looked at a IH 2 bottom tumble plow this afternoon, all there, but wheel bearings seem loose. You can shake the wheel and feel and see the slop, clunk clunk. Is $150 too much? Didn't catch the model number, but the backs of the moldboards are stamped "IH", and are blue.

The disk, 12' offset, looks ok. Not one with wheels for transport. It has wooden bearings. The current owner replaced a couple several years ago. The disks are not cracked or broken, and they seem to be tight on the bar. He wants $200. Are the wood bearings hard to find? (I'm in Colorado). The disk also appears (on the basis of the owner's foggy memory and remaining paint) to be IH. It was the type you "back into" to set the angle for disking, then pull ahead to straighten for transport, that's been converted to hydraulic. Didn't see them work, should I wait on that?

The tumble plow is most likely a model 39. It had steel wheels originally and later was offered with rubber tires. I plowed many acres with one of these in the '50's. I also have one to restore with a loose wheel bearing. I don't know the answer to that question, yet!

Kind of a moot point now. We had rain all night Saturday night, turned to snow late. Anyway, the plow and disk were 35 miles away on what are generously called gravel roads (here in Elbert County Colorado that means they spread a cubic yard of gravel per mile). Built up so much mud on the meuffler it tore it off my Explorer. Plow and disk money is now muffler money.

What's it feel like when that thing tumbles? The springs on the tonue look pretty big!

Be sure that the miniature plows on the camshaft are in agreement with what the plow is doing.
1st pull of the rope-1 wheel drops so you are plowing; 2nd pull--the frame catch releases, the frame & all 4 bottoms rotate (back end goes up-front goes down & under), both wheels come off the ground, and as you continue forward, the plow drops back to earth (Good old gravity!!)landing on both wheels again. 3rd pull drops the opposite wheel to plow the other direction, and 4th pull rolls(tumbles) the plow over again to where you started from. Kind of an exciting action to watch and the plow is NOT LIGHTWEIGHT so be careful of onlookers. Parts and oerator's manuals are available.
