I'm thinking of picking up a used John Deere seed drill. I'd like to be able to use it with native grass seed.

The seed dealer says the seed drill needs a Picker Wheel.

If the drill I"m looking at does not have a Picker Wheel, what would it take to make one up and install it?

Chuck,

I don't know what your intentions are for the drill, but if it is for a prairie restoration project, contact the state Dept. of Natural Resources or one of the local chapters of Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, etc. One of them almost certainly has a drill made specifically for planting native grass seeds.

I used one several years ago that I got from the DNR. Since I used my own tractor, prepared the ground myself, and supplied my own seed, I was able to use it free of charge - no strings attached. The local chapters of wildlife restoration/preservation groups will also possibly help with supplying some of the seed. Pheasants Forever helped me out with no reservation other than a verbal assurance that I would plant a food plot adjacent to the grassland for wildlife food.

FYI be careful with a solid mix of switchgrass. This stuff really provides cover! 8 ft tall and so thick that a man can barely walk through it! The pheasants don't seem to like it that thick - I should have used a mix so the switchgrass isn't too thick.

Good luck

Are you sure he didn't say 'Packer wheels'? They're used to pack the soil behind the drop tubes in each furrow...

If you want to use the drill for native grass seed, first we need to know what native grass seed you are going to plant. There are many kinds. If you have seed that is small such as Purple Praire clover or something similar to that size then you could use your drill if it has a grass seeder attachment. I think what someone told you about picker wheels is you need them if you want to plant seed that has a lot of trash or stems with it such as Indian grass or something similar to it. They are used to "pick" the seed from the hopper and drop it down (usually) a larger tube than most drill have to prevent it from clogging up the seed tubes. It would not be possible to retrofit your drill for this reason. Hope this helps. Leon in Mn.
