I started cutting hay with my self propelled windrower today, but I'm having a lot of problem with it clogging. The rubber on the roller on top is pretty smooth and I was wondering if I rough it up a little with a belt sander if it would help pull the hay through a little better?

The only time Ive had a problem like you describe is when my alfalfa crop is too wet. It seems to stick to the rollers no matter what the tension is on them. If I wait a little and let the moisture dry off later in the day I don't have a problem.

What kind of SP do you run? I have an old Hesston 110. IIRC, tightening the rubber roll is the cure for windups. My top rubber roll is smooth, bottom is ribbed steel.

I have a Hesston 310. I don't have a problem with it winding around the roller, it's not feeding through all the time and just building up between the rollers and the reel. I'm looking at getting a towed moco ASAP as I need to replace a shaft and I have to take everything apart, again, sigh!

I'm 72 years and I'm not even buying green bananas, say nothing of any more equipment, lol. I had a lot of trouble with my 110 last year with belts and bearings. The bearing next to the little sprocket inside the right drive housing went so I welded a bracket (piece of square tube) to the case below the shaft and mounted a split bearing (homemade) on it. Works fine. I don't think I could have gotten the big drive pulley off the other end of the shaft without ruining it.
