Hey, Why would this mower shear the rivets that hold the knife bar to the head. The dealer says that the head is not being made anymore so I can,t replace It. The mower is not all that old it runs on a belt not a pitman.

You have to check all the issues everyone has addressed and if every thing is right you should be able to run it at 540 rpm without any problems. Remember, it's old, you're it's Dr. and it needs TLC.

Is the sickle timed? Are the sections sharp? Does the sickle move freely in the cutterbar? Does the cutter bar have the proper amount of lead? Are the section laying flat on the guards? Are your wear plates worn out? Have the wrong size rivets been used? In other words, is everything on the cutterbar up to snuff? In my opinion the oblong holes are not the problem but a result of a problem.

What model of mower are we talking about here? Is it a 521? If it is then it is like an IH 1100. Irregardless parts should be available from the dealer or sickleservice dot com. If the holes in the head are shot, and the sections are poor you may be cheaper in the long run to buy a complete knife.

It is a New Idea 256, and has a belt not a pitman. How do I know if it is in time?

If you are shearing rivets, somewhere in your system something is loose, meaning a rivet or bolt is loose, or a hole is most likely out of round. If someone has cold riveted the head on the sickle using the cold method, the rivets may have come loose and caused the holes in the head or bar to become out of round,(most likely the bar). Heat your new rivet red hot,(you may need longer rivets) and try that. This will, or should fill any odd shaped hole. This is very likely to help you out. Good Luck.

You are right the holes in theknife part are very oblong. I did just cold rivet them last fall and tried to cut some lespedza hay, but they would get loose and shear after an hour or so. I am useing this cutter on a Ford 4610 tractor, how fast should I run it and in what gear.? Thnaks for any information. David in Va.

Your dealer is wrong. Those parts are available to him through a parts supply house. (Herschel) I do not have there Website. Sound like he needs a new partsman. I am an old NI blockman. DO NOT get those rivets hot. That is just applying a Band Aid. Does the knife slide into the cutter bar easily? Is it in time?
