On my grandfather"s Maryland farm in the 1950"s, he had an old New Holland Baler that was run with a 4 cylinder Wisconsin engine and had the canvas hay pickup on the left side. We (the men on the farm, I was little then) towed it around with the 1952 Farmall "H" that I currently have. It was so heavy that it broke the draw bar and my father had it reinforced with 2 1/2" plates on top and bottom.(Still there today). Anyone have a clue of what model was out then, or better yet, have photos or other information?

It's a 76, we had one when I was a kid. You could bale a lot of hay with it if it was dry but it wouldn't pick up damp hay. The pickup was on the wrong side so you had to rake it backwards

Knotters were on the side of the chamber, and the needles come through from the side. She's a 76. There was a model 75, but what you describe is the 76.

76 New Holland. The 77s did not have canvas pickup.

Perhaps I have confused the model numbers. Did they build a model 78? If so, then we had a model 78 and the neighbor had a model 77.

Correct. In this area of NW Iowa, they were easily the hightest capacity baler of their time.

If it has spoked rims, then a model 77, solid rims the newer model 76. We had a model 77 and we pulled it with a Farmall H and earlier with a Farmall Regular. The neighbor had a model 76. I have two model 77 sales brochures, but nothing on the model 77 except memories.

Is there any possibility you could post some pictures of the old baler?

I do remember it rocking the tractor back and forth, especially when it kicked out for the knotter to have a chance to do its thing!
