NY Hay Prices

Just looking for some feedback on how much other farmers in NY are going to increase (if any) there small square bale prices. I make 50 pound bales of Orchard/Timothy mix and sold it for 155 a ton last year. It was all gone by December. The fields are looking a little short so far this year so yield might be a lot less than last year.

In mid Michigan, $5 per bale. I can't see how you would make money much less than that.

Same place as Dan. I'm in Ore and have orders for about 8000 bales at $5.00 per bale behind the baler 55 to 60 lb bales and am getting orders every day.

Not in ny about as far away as possible, The neighbor just ran out of Hay. Shes paying 13.00 dollers a small(90lb) for grass. Just isn"t any here in this part of oregon and hey won"t be ready for a month.

Middle TN - Small bales are $3.50 in the field behind the baler, today. The hay is mixed grass, mostly fescue and has not been fertilized; all sold when announced. The field was given to me by a neighbor who wanted it cleaned up. This field might help pay for a new small tedder (10') that I just gave $1800.00 for and / or that lunchbox sized box of NH parts I paid $345.00 for.

here in east tx we sell by bale.i get 4.00 to 5.00 dollars square bale ,(costal grass hay) in field.i get 60.00 to 75.00 a bale for same costal for a round bale in the 1800 pound bale 5x6.some get same for 6x4 a bale at 1000 pounds bale.east tx is strange place to do hay busness.

Frankly, I think someone spending upwards of $5 for a small square bale is crazy. Good for us hay producers, I guess. If we have a good hay year, I"m thinking about sending some hay down south. Anyone doing this? How does it go for you?

By the way: I"ve only advertized once on a local Internet classified site, yesterday, and I"ve got orders for over 1000 bales. I haven"t been home yet today to check the answering machine, so we"ll see if there"s more. Plus I have a few people who always buy from me. Makes me kinda nervous - hope we have a good year!

The sale I go to, you take a load and sell that load to the highest bidder. You then deliver to the buyer if your lucky the buyer will have a truck or trailer at the auction and you load his truck at the auction. The delivery rate is free for the first 10 miles after that 75 cents a mile for pickup trucks and $1.00 mile for big trucks. The seller can charge more if he announces the rate before his load is sold.Hope this helps, Wayne

Here on the NY/PA border, near Olean, NY, I am asking $2.50 out of the field (they pick it up), and it will be at least $3.00 out of the barn this winter. That may be a little low, but I'm trying to "corner the market".

Very reasonable prices, I've been pretty shocked at what others are asking/expecting. You should have plenty of takers unless quality tanks.

Here in Pennsylvania good quality grass hay has been close to $300 at the auctions.

I saw that prices at the auctions in PA. were high. How does that work do you bring a sample and then you go to your barn to load or do you have to bring the hay to the auction?

Take a load in and sell it. Smaller loads bring more per bale. Many times that leads to future sales direct at the farm.
