I am working with an allis chalmers pull behind rotary mower. I do not know the model but just before the gearbox the shaft bolts together and there are 2 springs and what appears to be a place for two pins or "pawls" my question is hoe hard should these pins be? From what I have read this sound like the mechanism that allows the mower to keep rotating as you slow down. Is this the slip clutch? Should these pins be able to break away? There is also a big spring type thing before this which appears to be a relief should you hit a rock? any help would be appreciated.

thanks Dave

They appear to be about 1/2"diameter, flat on the outer end, they may have a turned down area at the back, where they contact the spring, can't remember exactly, they may still be available from AGCO. It wouldn't surprise me if they were case hardened. Try this question over at the unofficial Allis Chalmers page, I am sure they will get you an answer.

First, the overrunning clutch does have 2 pins that have springs behind them. I don't know the hardness, but in 30 years of running an a-c bush hog, the only problem I ever ran into was one of the springs breaking, you can tell by turning the shaft by hand, backwards, you should hear a clicking sound, and feel the resistance of the gearbox when you go forward. Now, the rattle clutch is a different animal. Needs to be loose enough to go off when you hit something, tight enough to not go off too quick, needs to be lubed, a little, but not too much. Those 2 big nuts on the front of the spring adjust the tension.

Thank you very much for the response that helps a lot. In my case for some reason the pins a missing. So that is why I am wondering. So the pins are not really shear pins??? Can I just make them out of bolts maybe start with some soft ones and see what happens? Hve you ever seen yours? Are the rounded on the end or blunt?

Any way I do really thank you for your input!!!
