i have a nh 55 rake that i loaned to a neighbor last year. when it was returned, i could no longer disengage the drive [rakes all the time] any suggestions before i start tearing it apart. "i"m a tryin to be a farmer" and only had the rake two years and it worked great. there is a small rod on the inside of each wheel drum that looks like it might have another position. any ideas what they do? thxs to anyone who replys

thxs for all the suggestions. you guys are great! glad i found you. i checked the gear box oil and it was good. the engage/disengage lever moves only slightly [i guess 1/5 is a good estimate. i replaced the cable early last year and it moves the lever as advertised but the lever also has about 1/4 - 3/8" up and down play. did ever since i got it [ the year before]
thxs again for the info

pull the cover off and check inside. sometimes the bolts break on shaft if forced.

The little levers on the axle put the 'dogs' (make the clicking sound on corners...) out of gear so the rake is not harmed while being towed down the highway faster than a tractor would pull it. It disengauges the axle from the wheels so nothing needs to turn at fast speeds. Probably woulda been good to know that earlier, right.....

The in & out of gear would be that bent rod sticking out of the top of the gearcase with the cable on it. You'll likely need to open that up & see what is messed up in there. Does that rod turn it's 1/5 or so turn, or is it frozen up, or is it 'free' to piviot without any resistance?

It is typical for the oil seal to not hold and all the oil to leak out of these. NH currently recommends you use grease in the gearcase instead of the original oil. If you haven't put any grease in it or checked the oil level, might be kinda dry in there.....

I've had mine apart to fix a bad bearing in the gearcase, but I won't try to guess what exactly is wrong on yours.

The rake is engaged or disengaged by the lever on the gearbox. The rod you noticed on the sides of the wheel hubs is part of the racheting mechanism.

I would check and make sure the cable that runs up to the front of the rake didn't slip so that it isn't disengaging the clutch in the gearbox. If you can move the lever on the top of the gearbox by hand farther than the cable is moving it, you may just need to shorten the cable. Otherwise it sounds like something came loose inside the gearbox If that's the case, you may be able to only pull the cover off the back of the gearbox to be able to tell (might even be able to fix it without a full teardown).

If you don't have a parts book on this, go to New Hollands website and click on the "parts and service" section. In there is a link to look at all NH's part listings online. Just do a search for "55" and scroll down till you find the rollerbar rake (it's about halfway down the list).

Best of luck,

Josh in WNY
