I have a 295 4 row planter. All of the plates I have are 24 cell. I was looking at buying some other sizes and saw the 16 cell plates. Would these work for corn? My seed bags show the 16 cell plates and I was wondering what the difference is other than less slots.

Stay with the 24 cell plates.
Whenever you think about 16 cell plates, go lie down until the thought goes away.
And...drive max of 5 mph. You are planting, not racing.

Thanks for the info on the plates. Again I have learned something else from the wise ones on this forum.

Either plate is used for corn. Buy plates to fit your seed corn or corn to fit the plates you have. Set the seed drop spacing ( plant population ) by using various combinations of the sprockets on the press wheel axle and the seed box drive shaft. This information is found in your operators manual. At any given combination of sprockets ,24 holes will space seed closer than 16 holes . Say that you want to space seed 8" apart. Either plate can be set to do it , but the combination of sprockets will be different to do so . Tractor ground speed is irrelevant in seed spacing other than faster speed generally result in more erratic spacing and slower speeds more accurate.
If you want to drive faster use 24 hole plates. They turn slower in the seed box than 16 holes will to plant the same spacing.

Not faster with your tractor. You turn the 24 cell plates slower in the seed boxes. Gives them more time to load.

Better to run the 24 cell and turn the plate at only 2/3rd. the speed of a 16 cell plate would be required to turn to get the same population as it will crack less seed and a cracked seed will not grow.

So if I read this right, it takes a faster speed to plant withy the 16 vs 24. How much faster are we talking. I use a MF 165 and plant in high 1st gear. Will I have to plant in 2nd high or just increase RPM in high 1st. Thanks for the info.

you want the slowest plate speed you can get and give the spacing you want and driving slower is usually better, a speed of 4 MPH is good with 16 cell and 6MPH is good for 24 cell as the plate will turn at the same speed.

Bass ackwards you will be able to plant faster with the 24 cell because the plate moves less revolutions to deliver the same amont of seed.

The number of cells along with sprocket and gear selection, if 295 has either, are for population determination.
