disc mower setup / use and tractor lift arm questions

Setting up a dic mower to use with my tractor. Questions are:

I know I use the top link connection bar to change the angle the mower sits at, do I adjust it so the blades swing level with the ground?

My tractor (JD 5510) has 2 levers which control the rear lift arms. The both seem to raise and lower the arms on the 3 point. I can't figure out the difference between the levers - maybe one is pressure type and the other a float or something? Any help in ID'ing the difference on the levers and how to use them to correctly adjust the mower when it is lowered to the ground for use appreciated!

2 levers, one position control, the other draft, leave draft set at "heavy" and use position control to lift/lower your mower.
As far as adjusting the pitch of the blades to the ground....your toplink does that job..shorten to angle closer to ground, lengthen to tilt away from ground.

Chris. I went through the same problem. I bought the manual, read it three times and was still confused. Most likely one lever is draft and one is postion. Keep asking questions, it's the only way to learn.

the best money i ever spent was getting a disc cutter caddy i have (KMC) set up to cut at hight of stubble you want.move with puckup truck and add any tractor you have and it works. went from having a 60 70 HP tractor to i think i could run it with a 47 H farmall on a level field.

The angle of the blades depends on the local terrain, etc. Folks in areas like Pauls don't have rocks so they tend to run with the knives swinging level or slightly downward, get a closer cut that way. Around here we angle them 5-8 degrees upward, we find much less rock damage that way.

Things could be worded a little better....

Likely you have a position/ draft control on your tractor, and one lever sets it for position (you'll want all the time) and the other direction is draft (only useful for plwing using a 3pt plow). The regular lever moves the 3pt up & down. That would be _my_ guess.

My Ford tractors have 'Dual' control on them. This allows a semi-mount plow to work just like a full 3pt plow in draft mode - moves the 3pt up and down on it's own as well as the rear cylinder, phased in with it. Takes a special hyd cylinder, as well as setting several levers & knobs correctly in the cab. I was told 20 years ago that moving one of the knobs at the wrong time could hurt things in the hydraulics.

Now, I've never used this 'feature', but I'd sure buy a manual, or visit a dealer, to fully understand these knobs & controls & levers _before_ I'd go throwing them back & forth 'just to see what happens'.

Bad things can happen sometimes.....

So, you are getting real good advice to GET A MANUAL to know how to operate your tractor.

The fact that you don't know isn't a big deal, and you shouldn't be critized on that.

Oh, I have to scratch my head sometimes about some of the controls on tractors I have used for years. If someone want to criticize me over that, go ahead. To answer your question, about the disc mower setting, a disc mower will cut at any angle. set the height to cut at what ever suits your needs. Some hay crops you don't want to cut too close since the plants might not grow back as fast for the second crop. Small grain like oats isn't going to grow back so cut it all. Close cutting trims the fire ant mounds good and level. Rumor has it it will do the same for gopher mounds.

I have never used a JD 5510 so my suggestion is to call a John Deere dealer.

I don't know how to say this without sounding ugly..... ..... .you're gonna use a tractor and don't even know what the VARIOUS LEVERS ARE FOR?
At least get an operator's manual. (get one for the mower, also). I've been driving tractors since 1952 and just when you think you've heard it all..... .... The tractor was a brand new "H" Farmall; it was a simpler tractor, but I promise you I knew how everything worked BEFOREHAND and I was only 8 years old!

Well then, your help is appreciated - I'm sure you can tell me how do they work?

I've run this tractor for about two years now, but everything has been pull behind attatchments (bush hog, haybine, tedder, etc).

Have a guy with as much "experience" as you who came to look at it with me and wasn't sure how they worked either.

Chris you should really listen to thurlow because he was right on the money.

He knew he was going to be ugly and he did it anyway.

Don't know about the levers but some good person on here will. If you don't ask you don't learn.

If I were an old experienced tractor driver like yourself (2 years translates into.....500-800 hrs usage??) and I was gonna depend on the internet to teach me how to operate my tractor, I'd probably 'Google' position control/draft control. Have a good 'un..... ..

Thanks for those who gave advice. Now that I know what the levers in question were called, I did google it and figured out how they worked.

Nothing online that I could find on the Kuhn disc mower, but I read the JD disc mower manual since they are fairly similar and hopefully can go from there!
