Hi, went and looked at this unit the other day, the man told me it had a 2" chunk missing from the top roller, which it did. Looks like a stone or something went thru. The rest of the roll had lots of fine cracks along the ribs and a few thin spots that you could actually see where it was worn thru to the metal base underneath. The rest of the machines sheet metal appeared to be in good condition. The right side cover was missing, so I was able to see that the tensioner pulley was out of alignment with the rest of the pulleys. The owner had fashioned a "homemade" chain tensioner instead of replacing the chain. and last but not least the hydraulic cylinder and hose were removed from the unit at some point. I'm not sure on the cost of the hydraulics but I'm sure it wouldnt be cheap. I'm thinking that the $700 he's asking might be a bit high considering the missing parts and the condition of the top roll(the bottom roll looks fine) Any thoughts? thanks Neal

The hydraulic cylinder/hoses is no big deal. Cylinders are interchangeable and often do not stay with the machine as they get used on other equipment too. You will need one with an 8" stroke and at least a 3" bore. You should be able to pick one up at an auction for $50-$75 with hoses. You may need to add the correct ends to work with your tractor. They are also available at most farm supply stores & you should be able to get set up for around $200-$225, maybe less. The chunk missing from the roller should not bother much. Mine is missing several chunks that are larger than 2" and I have several wear spots like you describe. Not sure about the tensioner, but you should be able to find one in a junk yard if what is on there now doesn't work. The price doesn't sound too bad, they often bring over $1000 yet at auction. Check the sickle drive assy. for play. This is usually the first thing to go bad, but the bearings can be replaced if the shaft is not worn too much.
