Just wondering if anyone else has or had a case 281 side rake, just fixing mine up, needs a bunch of teeth (A+I products has them pretty cheap T17350) and had the top bearing bad on the the gear box and the bottom sealed brg leaked gear oil out in just a few minutes. Seems to be a poor design for the top and bottom seal which lets water in and oil out. The only other one I have seen was at a dealer and the gear box was all locked up and they were selling it as is for $75. Just wondered if anyone else has one or has any tricks for them.

Yes I have one, put a search on the web you should be able to find a parts book and manual. I also am reconditioning mine, found teeth but looking for caps. Grease in the gearbox is a go unless you are raking lots of acres.

I use one. I'm in need of a hub and ratchet assembly for it as the dogs broke in mine and cracked the hub also. Other than that mine is in great condition.

Fill the gearbox with grease and go. New Holland stoped using oil and went to grease in the gearbox around 1978 or 79.

must not be too many of them around, we had a big case dealer in our area, Westen KY. He sold case tractors, but New Holland hay equipment.

On the gear box, I would not take the time to put seals in it, just fill it with grease and go the the field. Many of us KY rednecks run grease in bushhog gearboxes and New Holland hay rake gearboxes. The gearboxs operate fine with grease.

You can even fill the steering box on your little ford or ferguson tractor with grease.

Good luck and stay safe,
