Need help identifying this JD Disk Harrow

Here is a picture of a RW. Not sure how the RWA's differ, but my RW has white iron greaseable bearings, not sealed bearings. I run a 3 x 8 double action cylinder with my disk. I like the double action since you can raise the wheels above the disk to add the weight of the wheel assemblies to gain a little more weight when cutting at maximum depth. I believe with a single acting cylinder the wheels would just ride on the ground when the disc is fully lowered. The best price for a 3 x 8 cylinder I found was Northern Tools. You will also need hoses and fittings for the cylinder. If you stay away from the dealer you should be able to get the cylinder, hoses, and fittings for around $150.00 �. Used car or truck tires were commonly used for these disks. You don't need to buy implement tires. Tire sizes for an RW are 5.90 x 15, 6.40 x 15, 6.70 x 15, 7.10 x 15, or 7.60 x 15, or equivalent modern tire sizes. I hope this helps. Rick

Probably 15", 7.5L-15 or 9.4L-15 would be good implement tires also available as 14" tires. But used truck tires are generally a lot cheaper to own.

I second the hydraulic cylinder. Most implements use a 3x8 or a 3-1/2" x 8" stroke cylinder. Typically near 20" closed length. Standard on the shelf in every farm store.

I've not found much need for a double acting cylinder on implements and have converted planter, plow, disk, and field cultivator to single acting cylinders. Actually I use the same 3x8 cylinder on all but the planter. A 3-1/2 would be better but I broke the one that came on my plow with the disk. A bit of interfernce between the mounting and the end cap of the cylinder.

TSC, Value-built, Farm and Fleet, Shoup, Sloan Express, Fleet and Farm, Bucheit's, Theisen, Orcheln, Farm and Home, Shopper's Supply, Norby's, Northern Tool, and Baum Hydraulics all will have at least one 3x8 cylinder, most will have several pressure ratings as well as 3-1/2 x 8 cylinders. That is to say that if a store has hydraulics, it will have a 3x8 cylinder. That little light weight disk should be fine with a 3" cylinder unless the tractor hydraulics are 1250 psi instead of 2250 psi.

To run a double acting cylinder you need only one hose and you need a filtered vent plug for the other cylinder port.

An 8" stroke cylinder is 20.25" center to center when closed generally.
