I know that this is a little off topic but was just looking for opinions on automatic vs manual head gates. Me and my brothers are looking at purchasing a squeeze gate are unsure which to purchase. We have around 25 cows of various types. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I really like my automatic. I've had it for about 5 years, run 50 cows through it twice a year, and have never had any troublt with it. It is nice to just set it and run the cow through. It has never missed a cow yet, and some of them are 1700lb cows.

I haven"t tried one yet, but I plan to buy a Priefert head gate that will work auto or manual. I looked at one at a show and looked like it would work good. I have both manual and auto now and I like the auto for on or two head when I"m by myself, but I don"t like it when working a big bunch it doesn"t clamp down tight on their neck and they go forward and backward in the chute and its hard to give shots in the neck. The new one will replace the auto so I"ll have a good Formost for sale. Lee

I have an auto but still stand there with my hand on the lever to "help" close it, sometimes they slip by, or it doesn't catch correctly.

also, the vet uses a manual, I have noticed the one advantage with them with different size cows is that a manual is easy to adjust (just shut tighter). With an auto (at least mine) you have to pull a couple of pins and slide the gates/in out which can take a minute or so each time if there if a large variance in the size of cow. Sometime the pins get jammed and it can really slow down running them through a chute.

i've run a few thousand head thru auto gates with hardly a problem...only probs i've seen is with longhorns and its hell to get em into gate at all...i'm still tryin to figure out how anybody had cattle get halfway thru without alot of operator error...ie: gate spacing for large cattle and running calves thru it.

Auto is the only way to go. As to brand kind of depends on what is available locally but one thing I do know from being in the fence etc biz is that Preifert out of Texas stands behind their lifetime warranty.

Get an automatic, with it you can catch the animal by yourself. The manual usually take 2 peopole to catch the animal. Good luck.
