Hay baling on the shares

I was just wondering what percentage people are baling hay on the shares? Is anyone still baling 50/50 with the price of fuel and twine? I live in southwestern OH. Thank you for any help in advance.

I have it made. I split the fertilizer 50/50 the farmer comes out cuts, rakes and bales. He gets 2/3 and buys my 1/3. I have a nice green pasture and out a few MORE dollars now on fertilizer. Then in the fall I rent out the pasture for cattle. It works for me.

I am going to be doing it for 2/3's me 1/3 landowner. We will be dividing fuel, twine, seed and fertilizer. I will pay maintenance on my equipment, and owner will pay taxes and get hay for two horses. This is a thiry acre field.

50/50 and or 60/40 here in Nebraska. Ive done both ways. I do 20 acres of alf and 20 brome. I also share 50/50 with neighbor who has about 5-7 acres. I guess I figure if I make up my gas, twine and alittle extra than its worth it. For instance: it takes me two tanks of gas intractor to cut my 20 acres, rake and bale. @27gal tank thats 54 gallons x 4.00= 216.00 plus 27.00 for each box of twine. So I have rough 250.00 just in consums. Now if I get 1000 bales and sell each bale for 4.00 that makes up my time and supplies. HOWEVER cutting my neighbors brome takes half of gas which is 110.00 plus twine = 140.00. I get half of this hay which was 75 bales. @4.00 = 300.00 So my profit goes down alot for half the wear and tear. Thats the way I look at it anyway.

Dairyman next to me does 70 acres of mine 50/50 and buys my part. Its pretty decent alfalfa, he raises 15 or so acres of corn on it every year and that keeps my crop rotations going. I seed it, lime and fertilize to soil test in the establishment year. He pumps liquid manure on it then every spring. He rolls and wraps my part of the first cutting, buys my part of the others. Its been a good deal for both of us for a lot of years, and I think we are both loath to change it.

The other side of the coin is I wont do any hay on shares as an operator, period. Last year I would for 2/3rds but this year its cash and carry, period. I gain at least a cutting by having him do it and wrap, plus I gain on the second cutting as Im still working on my first when he's taking it off. About the time I'm getting finished with mine is when the phone starts ringing for people looking for a custom operator after theirs didnt show up, or hasnt gotten there yet.

I don"t even mess with shares anymore. Deal one is: I pay all the inputs, I keep all the hay. Deal two is: landowner buys all the inputs, I put it up for xx amount per hour (determined by cost of fuel, twine, etc.) and they keep all of it. It has made my life much simpler, got rid of the moaners and whiners.

Does the landlord pay for fertilizer.

It went up also.

The cost of his land and taxes go up also.
