I bought a used one (1996 I think), I ordered a manual but don't have it yet. I am about 2 weeks away from making hay. I am ordering 2 sets of blades, bolts for the blades and a set of belts, any other spares I should have. This machine has a segmented bar, what lube do I use and how do I change it? How do you set the cutting height (I want tall stubble)? Any tricks or quirky behavior I should know about. I'm using a 95 Hp (6 cylinder non turbo- MF4260) tractor to drive it.

Have you checked the skid plates under the bar for wear? If they are not too badly worn, you can extend their life by welding on plates. Is that the cutterbar where each segment has its own oil supply? A neighbor with a 3ph hitch type NH said he used a level to make sure the bar was level both ways before checking the oil. I personally think it would be a good idea to change the oil in the cutterbar and gearbox. Probably the oil is 80-90 gear oil, but you could call a NH dealer.

I would check with a New Holland dealer, they can let you know what type of lube would work (of course they'll try and get you to use theirs). I'm not sure how to drain the fluid, but I know that there is a fill port on the backside of each section. Just remove the plug (which is also a dipstick) and make sure there is enough oil and that it doesn't look dirty.

I think the 1411 came standard with a hydraulic tilt (at least is does now). The cylinder is tied into the lift cylinders. When the mower is lowered, it sets the cutterbar down on the back of the skids, if you continue to "lower" the mower, the cutterbar tips forward to decrease the mowing height. You can also get special skids that will allow you to mow even higher.

If it is a manual adjustment, there should be a adjustable link on the top of the hood.

The only quirk that I noticed when I tried one was that you can't take tight left turns when it is in the transport position. The way the hitch is designed, you don't have much room between the tonge and the rear tire. Makes it nice to handle when your mowing though.

Best of luck,

I've noticed the turning depends what tractor you're using, some have the drawbar and hitch very near the rear. Mine is recessed a lot and I've rubbed a lot of tire off on NH mowers. Those Kuhn gyro hitches sure look nice.

I believe the height is adjusted by adjusting the angle of the cutter bar, seems to me there is a tie rod you can crank on the manual models and it is hydraulic on some models.
