Round Baler for 40hp pto tractor

Looking for a used baler that can be used behind a 40 pto HP tractor.
Looking for something that we can get parts for and is reliable.
Have read about chain/bar balers and belt balers.
Does one run easier than the other?
Hydraulic tie etc
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Vermeer 504 F,G & H can be set to work with 35 PTO HP. All you have to do is to change the main drive gear from a 13 tooth to a 11 tooth gear. The Vermeer 504 I, 5400 Rebel & 5410 Rebel will pull with a 40 HP tractor.

4000 lb. tractor is heavy enough. I had a NH 847 chain baler and 40 hp would not be enough for it. I also had a MF 1450 which I think is a Vermeer 504 F. I tried a neighbors new 35 hp Long compact tractor with it for curiosity and it pulled it fine. I was on flat land. I would recommend a Vermeer 504 F, G, or H. They are open throat balers and will start bales reliably when properly adjusted. Don't know about other makes.

I used a Vermeer 504C with a Ford 3910 (42hp engine, 35hp PTO). Mostly flat ground, had plenty of power. The 504C was very picky about starting a bale. The 504C is a closed throat baler. The hay has to be just right (not too dry, not too wet).

I just bought a Hesston 530 3X4 baler. I plan to use it with my new JD 5303 (64hp engine, 52hp PTO). I am keeping the 504C for a little while as a backup.

I am told an open throat baler is much easier to use.

The 3910 is actually 42 on the PTO and about 50 at the flywheel. Mabey a bit more if the high idle has been increased a bit.

New Holland chain balers 845, 846 may meet the need, but loves power when it is full. Our old 846 gave the John Deere a workout, 60 horse and I used 50, so it was working. Wasn't bad though.

As close as I can compare apples to apples would be a 4x4 NH chain baler and a 4x4 NH belt baler. The belt baler took much less horsepower. Just a lot of metal flying around with the chains. Bale density is a major consideration to horsepower consumption. The more hay you put in a package the more power it takes. I've 'cheated' a few times and put 52 hp on a 4x4 chain baler and 4x5 belt baler. In both cases it 'pulled the baler' and kept adequate PTO speed, but it pulled the guts out of the tractor. To prevent tractor overheating ground speed had to be kept to the lowest gear. Did it work? yes, is it something I care to do regularly, no.

Dunno... I can't imagine having less than 55 hp in front of a round baler just to turn it. 70-80 seems to make them productive.
If you've got a slow turning baler with limited capacity then I spose it could be run with 40 horse, but I've honestly never heard of anyone around here working successfully with less than 50, and that was on one of those tiny CaseIh/Hesston things that makes a 3x4 bale...

Neighbours Case/IH 4x4 rounder pulls nicely with 42 pto hp. It has almost no load on the tractor even baling at 5+ mph. I even had the A/C running full tilt.

I find the 4x4 size too small though. Spend all your time tieing bales instead of baling. I know I could easily outrun that baler with my JD336 square baler.

i pull a 634 new holland baler with my 2150 john deere with no problems. it is a 3 cylinder diesel with 45 hp. the baler is a 4x4 650 lb bale

hope you find what you are looking for. A round baler is a load for a small tractor.

Do not know if its worth tearing up a good tractor on a round baler.

my neighbor ripped out the pto clutchs on a 485 case with a round baler. Now they use a 756 IH.

On some jobs the pups need to stay on the porch and let the big dogs hunt.

We have a Krone 125 and Krone 260.

We paid $1200 for the 125 and $2000 for the 260.

The Krone 125 requires 25 - 34 HP.

The Krone 260 requires 40 HP minimum.

We use 'Big John' a 70 Diesel with 51 HP to power the Krone 260.

These are fixed chamber balers and are chain/bar; no belts to replace.

The majority of preventive maintenance can be done with two wrenches.

Yes, the Krone 260 makes a 4x5 bale.

Both balers have a density indicators on each side with a scale of 0 to 3.

I set the 'density' mark at 2 on both sides.

Nancy does not want to wrap the bales too tight because of mildew/mold/moister.

Bales are firm, but you can run your hand inside to check the heat.

There is never a hard core to throw away and makes for some unusual patterns.

Will make the first cut this weekend and will rake and bale, weather permitting, over Memorial weekend.

Love the smell of fresh cut hay.

In addition to the Hesston and NH630 you can try a Vermeer 504C (same as MF450 and Badger BN614), it only requires min. 35 PTO hp. These were made in late 1970's and can be bought for <$2,000. I have used one with a MF135 (38 PTO hp)on flat land no problems, makes 4x5 or smaller bales. But, I use another tractor (52 PTO hp) primarily for baling, which handles the weight better. I believe later Vermeer 504 models require 40 PTO hp. If you plan on much round baling you should probably get a bigger/heavier tractor at least 50 PTO hp, or just small square bale with a 40 hp tractor. Good Luck

New Holland 630 will run with a 40 hp tractor I believe. PTO hp is not so much important as the weight of the tractor. Have a JD 1250 rated at 40 pto hp that I wouldn't dare put in front of our NH 630, too light. A Farmall 350 or such would probably be OK. IPTO is a must.

The only rould balers small enough for a 40hp that I know of are made by Hesston. Older used balers for use with 40 hp are only Hesstons that I have found. For a new unit the Hesston"s are also labeled under the Massey Ferguson label. I think the older Hesston"s were 5530"s.
