help with disc mower choice

Looking at 2 used disc mowers.

One is a 7ft LONG brand (don't know anything about them or parts?) - looks in good condition, but does not seem very "heavly" built.

Other is a 8 ft bush hog. But the top bar that hold the tarp is bent back a bit. I would guess the guy hit something with the cutter bar and the top bar. He said he broke the front bolt that holds the gearbox and had to replace it and the drive shaft (but didn't say how it happened).
The bush hog brand is very much more heavily built and I would guess longevity is better but I don't know if it is ok, and I think a new cover hung on the frame might get tore up by the outside disk now..

Any ideas?

I understand about the money aspect of it all to well, but you truely get what you pay for with used mowers. I bought a used 8ft roto brand mower last year and had about $1800+ in it bought it for $600 and never could make it right. It was one thing right after another with it, I spent more time broke down and working on it than I did cutting. Finally me and my dad loaded it up and traded it in for a new 9ft Vermeer and haven't regretted it one bit. I bought a 8ft gmd600 Kuhn at auction this spring for $2000 and put new skid plates on it and blades and haven't had a problem yet. From my personal experience if it is missing covers or a tarp, i'd be extremely leary of the machine. Look at any other equipment an individual has around to see how they treat their equipment and how they maintain it. If it looks abused, then more than likely it is and will be a money pit. I just sold a 7ft duetz allis a couple days ago for $1500 here in Georgia just south of Chattanooga. I hope this helps.

budget. When I get to the point I can buy new, I will get a drum mower.

Well, went to pick one up and the guy had sold them both. Guess the search continues. Sad thing is I started looking last year after hay season to beat the hay season rush and here I am...

I'm here in Tn, I did call hay dr to see if he had any used ones
I've been looking for about a year for something. Don't have a job right now so my budget is around $1200. Everyone seems to want $3500 for junk here. I have been borrowing a friends haybine but it finally ate a few sprockets from the rollers moving because a collar wasn't on right. The long is really cheap ($800) but needs a curtain and blades (I am still researching parts to see what I can get - if blades are interchangeable with any other brand). The bushog is $1200 but now I am pretty sure it was wrecked so I think I should giveup on it, who knows how the guy put it back together. If the Long can get me through a few seasons at that price I'll be ok, a new tarp will be half the cost of the unit.

Why purchase a used disc mower when you can purchase a brand new drum mower for less money? The drum mower gives you the cutting technology of a disc mower at half the price.

I had a BH brand for a while, GHM 800 that I bought new. It was a decent mower for 3-4 seasons, then started having problems. Ended up rebuilding the gear box and replacing the hub that the PTO shaft hooks to. Just turned into a money pit.

All the custom operators here (Me included)use Kuhn disc mowers. You can buy cheaper but you can"t buy a better one. The price of any used disc mower would have to be dirt cheap for me to even consider it.

case or a new holland are by far the best. individual gear boxs keep and failures in one place the others are all connected and use the same common oil which could ruin all the gear boxes. Thats my take and why I got my new holland 617. Don

Make sure to replace tattered and worn disc mower curtains. Safty first! There are aftermarket curtains available for $220 to $300.

The HM series of bush hog disc mowers was made by Keverneland who owns Tarrup and Vicon, same mower just painted red, stay away from the long it will be hard to get parts for!

Unless you know the seller personally, I'd be very reluctant to buy any used disc mower. If they haven't been taken care of they can get expensive. But to answer your question, I'd probably choose the bush hog because of parts.

Hold out and buy a Vicon if you can find one.

Don't know anything about.....never heard of..... ..Long; what model is the Bush Hog; there were some problems with the 1st series; bearings spinning/blades getting out of time. Supposedly the later ones were better..... .can't for the life of me remember the model number, but I had one of the early ones.
