Looking at buying a New Holland discbine mower-conditioner. Thinking about a 1411 with rubber rollers or a 1412 with flails. Grass hay only, no alfalfa, ocasionally some sorghum-sudan. Have heard that flail conditioning can gain a day over rubber roll conditioning but it beats the hay up more. Most of the hay is for the horse trade. Anyone have knowledge or experience with these machines. Don't want to make a $$$$$$$$$ mistake.

Also, any known issues with these machines?

I would go with the 1412, the impellers are the way to go in grass

I can't speak for the New Hollands, but I do know that out here where we are, roll conditioners don't work as well as flails. About the only things we do with our mowers here in Washington is grass, and maybe some straw, but thats about it. The impeller conditioners seem to give us an earlier dry out time than do the rolls, but that might be related to weather more the the conditioner.

My only experience with discbine mower-conditioner was with a Tarrup; found it to be much more trouble free than the JD and NH (roll conditoners) we had earlier, though they were both sickle cut. My experience was different from Roger's (different brand); I've cut 12 ft tall sorghum/sudan hybrid with no problem.

For your stated uses, the 1412 would be my choice without hesitation.

I know JD flails do not like sorghum sudan if it very tall. Will make a bale around the flails.

However, flails work well in grass!

I have mowed 30 to 50 acres of BMR 4 feet tall the last 4 or 5 years. Never had a problem wrapping with 920 JD with impeler.
